31 July 2025
In honour of International Cat Day on 8 August, Feline Guardians will host a series of in-person and virtual events to highlight the ongoing global cat torture crisis.
Thousands of defenseless cats and kittens are suffering in the absence of animal cruelty laws in China, where videos of brutal cat torture make their rounds online. An undercover investigation by CNN in May 2025 discovered evidence of one new abuse video uploaded every three hours. Since then, further evidence documenting 1,000 cat torture posts on mainstream social media per month has been uncovered and documented. Â
Throughout August, Feline Guardians will spotlight International Cat Day across its online channels with curated social media content that gives a voice to the victims of this crisis. These posts will feature victim stories and educational resources presented in a safe, non-graphic format. The campaign will also celebrate uplifting stories of cats who have transformed the lives of their human companions, and the people working tirelessly to protect cats around the world.Â
The in-person element will include vigils hosted by Feline Guardians chapters in various countries to honour cats who have suffered abuse. Media are invited to attend these vigils. High-resolution images from the global events will be available upon request. An online memorial will be hosted by the Social Media Animal Cruelty Coalition (SMACC), which includes representatives from the RSPCA, Four Paws, the SPCA, and other organizations. The President of Feline Guardians will be speaking at the event. Â
Â
Feline Guardians is also calling on political leaders from all over the world to support its mission of ending cat torture in China and beyond. Politicians are encouraged to sign petitions to call on China to create much-needed animal cruelty laws to protect innocent cats from being tortured for entertainment.Â
Â
Feline Guardians urges the media to cover International Cat Day events, in order to help bring an end to this worldwide crisis. Together, we can create a world where no cat suffers in silence. Â
