The Geelong Animal Welfare Society (GAWS) has launched its 2025 Christmas Appeal, calling on the
community to help give every animal in its care a second chance.
With around 400 animals expected to spend Christmas Day in GAWS’ care, community support is crucial. It costs more than $65 a day on average to care for just one animal, covering essentials such as food, shelter, veterinary treatment and care.
“This Christmas, your support can change lives,” GAWS CEO Helen Cocks said. “Every dollar helps an animal move from rescue to recovering, and ultimately, into their forever home.”
This year, people can support GAWS in multiple ways:
Make a Donation - A financial contribution ensures vulnerable animals in shelter receive the love, safety and veterinary support they need to thrive.
Contribute to the GAWS Wishlist - Supporters can choose to donate towards specific items that provide comfort and care, from treats to surgical lights, cat caves to foster care packs.
Get on the GAWS “Nice Businesses List” - Local businesses are encouraged to make a meaningful donation to make a difference.
Send an eCard - People can send a festive GAWS eCard to a loved one while supporting a great cause.
A Story of Hope: Meet Cerberus
Among the animals hoping for a brighter Christmas is Cerberus, a four-year-old Rottweiler mix who arrived at GAWS frightened and emaciated. At just 24 kilograms, with visible ribs and a skin condition, Cerberus had endured more than any dog should.
“When Cerberus arrived, he was in poor condition. Our team provided him with urgent veterinary care and comfort,” GAWS Animal Supervisor – Canine Danielle Richens said. “Slowly over many weeks, Cerberus began to heal and put on weight. His transformation has been extraordinary.
Now healthier, stronger and full of affection, Cerberus got the greatest Christmas gift of all last week: a loving forever home.
“I don’t need much,” Cerberus’ story reads, “just a home that’s kind and gentle. To never worry about my next meal. To know that I’m safe, loved and home. GAWS has already given me a second chance. But they can only keep helping dogs like me because of people like you.”
GAWS is urging the community to open their hearts this Christmas and help animals like Cerberus get their second chance.
